Old thermostat wiring January 15, 9: What would be the correct configuration to the new thermostat? I’ve searched high and low for the answer. Was there not one included with yours? If it helps mine was a Hunter thermostat and you can find the manuals online in the off chance this is standardized. The instruction manual for the thermostat that I installed had all the information to determine which wires went where. What model do you have? Doesn’t a mercury thermostat i.
How to Set the Thermostat for an Electric Heat Pump Furnace
Thermostats manufactured before with a sliding tab or turn knob often come with a glass vial of mercury that is used to run the furnace. These thermostats can be safely recycled at HVAC wholesale distributors, of which there are over collection locations in California, to ensure that mercury is reused. Remove the screws that are holding the thermostat to the wall and gently pull the thermostat away from the wall to expose the wires.
If you are having problems getting it to work it is important to make sure you have the same connections from the air handler to the thermostat to the condensing unit.
These thermostats, whichever type of thermostat or thermostats you have, require little maintenance. Often, I find that the only thing people know about their AC and Heating systems is how to turn the thermostat on and off. And change the temperature setting. The purpose of this site is to help people go beyond the thermostat.
To learn more about their system as a whole. And not just a dial on the wall that adjusts the temperature when they are not comfortable. We have many other related articles. Use the search feature to the right to help you find other related articles. Sometimes this is true but often it is something entirely different than the thermostat. They go down to the local hardware store and purchase a brand new thermostat.
They get home and dust off the toolbox. Some are successful at changing the thermostat and some are not. Those that are most likely read some thermostat installation directions or had someone read the thermostats installation directions for them. The ones that are not successful end up calling a professional in to install a new thermostat.
Nest Learning Thermostat explained: How to install the smart heating thermostat
Posted on Dec 07, Last Updated: Now that it’s been a full year since I installed the Nest I thought I’d reflect back on the experience. While I am still very happy with it, the actual energy savings, if any, are difficult to quantify.
Paul Suarez Hey Mark, So what is the total load that will be controlled by the thermostat?
I am trying like hell to get this hyped up gadget off the “upsell” options list and to replace it with a more geo friendly stat. Short answer, it has NO settings for a geothermal system in it. Long answer, because the Nest has no settings for a geothermal it will try and operate like a standard heat pump system turning on the heat strips much faster than it should to help heat the house up. Also because it is self learning, it will work in its own best interest and not in the interest of saving money.
For example, homeowner routinly sets thermostat at 60 when gone and 70 when home, the nest will learn this and turn off the system and then use the strip heat to heat up the home, rather than the more efficient way of setting back the thermostat degrees and using the geo to heat the home. Also with dual stage systems Most geo systems installed after or so seem to be dual stage the NEST does not have the best staging controls.
The prestige HD has internet controls I use it on my personal home it has numerous settings for proper heat pump, dual stage heat pump and geothermal operation and will ultimatly save your customer more than a NEST ever will.
Nest Thermostat Wiring for Baseboard Heaters
Which sounds like YOUR situation. Even when it’s 25F outside the heat pump is at least twice as efficient as the electric elements. If it’s possible to turn off the resistance elements or put it on a switch, for use during actual emergencies, such as when the heat pump portion needs repair a set back strategy can save energy use, but you will have longer recovery ramps.
That means you can control it with voice-activated smart speakers.
It makes me realize just how poor the industrial and UI design is for most t-stats! Other than those two no other adjustments are made. Well, same here, Jack: I also had it programmed to change at off hours. Now, you might have no interest in this, but the beauty in the nest is that you just USE the t’stat. Now, obviously, you do this within reason It is “stupid simple” as the kids say to operate.
How to Connect the Thermostat to a Two Stage Forced Air Gas Furnace
As soon as I convinced my wife it was worth the investment, I went straight to Amazon Prime. When it started having trouble connecting it to my wifi, I realized my common wire does not have enough voltage to power the Nest! Most modern thermostats require what is known as a c wire. What is a C wire?
Identify the circuit for the furnace or heat pump, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the thermostat wiring.
It can also be pretty simple given that you have the right tools. But before reading this and following through, make sure that you view our disclaimer as we are not going to be held responsible if you damage your equipment or injure yourself. If you still feel like you have enough common sense to follow this guide and install a thermostat yourself and save money, then read on… Determine What Type of System You Have First The following thermostat replacement tutorial is covering a split system, single stage compressor, using a 1F White Rogers digital thermostat.
DIY Thermostat Replacement Tools Needed for Easy Replacement — Small flat head screwdriver, needle nose pliers, wire strippers, volt meter, drill with Phillips head drill bit, drywall anchors. Removing the Old Thermostat First thing you want to do is turn the power off to the air handler or furnace. Then you are going to remove the cover from the old thermostat. Usually this is done by pulling from the top of the thermostat in the middle, towards you and the cover should pop right off.
With your small flat head screwdriver loosen all of the set screws from the wires and using you needle nose pliers, remove the wires from the set screws. Unmount the screws securing the old thermostat and then you should be able to pull the thermostat off of the wall. Installing the New Thermostat Pop the cover off of the new thermostat, note that some T-stats have a small set screw that you will have to loosen to get the cover off, but this should be covered in the installation instructions.
The I will usually get a pen and a torpedo level and get an idea of where I am going to mount the thermostat. Once I got it flush against the wall with the wires through the hole I will make two marks with my pen. Pull the thermostat back from the wall and insert your drywall anchors.
What you need to know about installing your Nest Thermostat
Hey all, I have a question that I hope some folks who know more than me could help with. I am looking to upgrade to a wifi capable thermostat for a 2nd home. The house is small, near the coast and has a 2ton WaterFurnace Envision series 5 geothermal cube. Since we usually only spend weekends there, and sometimes go long winter stretches without going at all, we usually set the Geothermal at 55 in winter and 76 in summer when we leave, and then bring the system to temperature 2 degrees at a time during the winter as to avoid the back up heat kicking in when we get back.
Now, you might have no interest in this, but the beauty in the nest is that you just USE the t’stat.
If you are even moderately handy, you might scoff at the idea of hiring an electrician to help install a new thermostat. And you would be right—in most cases. What is a C-Wire? But with modern thermostats, you need a second wire to complete the circuit so that power can flow continuously to the unit. This wire is known as the C-wire or common wire. How to Tell If You Have a C-Wire The easiest way to see if you already have a C-wire installed is to simply open up your thermostat and check out the wiring.
Open up the access panel and check the terminals. If a C-wire was run, it should be connected here even if it is not connected at the thermostat. If you find a C-wire here, it probably means that the other end is stuffed into the wall just behind the thermostat. If you do not find a C-wire, you may have several options, not all of them good. First of all, you may find some DIY articles that advise using the fan wire G terminal as your C-wire.
There are a few models out there that claim to fit the bill, but be careful—some models compensate for lack of a C-wire by drawing power directly from the furnace or air conditioner. This is fine when the system is running, but when it is not running the thermostat will essentially have to turn it on in order to draw power.
Follow techland A little under a year ago, a started named Nest Labs announced its first product, a high-tech thermostat which learns from your usage, nudges you to conserve energy and can be remote-controlled from a smartphone, tablet or web browser. Fadell was the guy who brought Apple his idea for an MP3 player — the one which became the iPod, a product line he ran for years. And now Nest Labs is unveiling its second-generation model.
At first glance, in fact, the new Nest learning thermostat looks exactly like the old Nest learning thermostat. But the Nest folks made a bunch of fussy little tweaks to the design, none of which were absolutely necessary but all of which make the thermostat simpler and more refined.
Smart thermostats are the biggest development in heating technology in three decades.
Answer yes and follow the prompts to create an administrator user Start the development server listening on all IP addresses on port python manage. A page should display showing the current temperature, temperature setpoint, humidity, humidity setpoint, and mode. Verify the readings listed on the page match those on the Climaduino Thermostat’s LCD if you installed one. Change the temperature by clicking or tapping on the button displaying the temperature.
Change it to another value and verify the setpoint displayed on the thermostat’s LCD displays the new value after a couple seconds pass. Access the administrative interface from your computer by browsing to http: Log on using the administrative credentials entered during the database setup. Polishing the Setup The setup as we left it is not very polished.

Podcast Network January 23, You are here: The DIY market has always patronized the Home Depots and Lowes from the day they bought their first house and the DIY market has never belonged to any distributor or contractor, but the potential of Nest to impact our markets beyond the DIYs bears conspiracy, I mean, considerable attention.
Although, a twenty dollar Starbucks card goes to the first person who correctly identifies the third largest stock holder in Nest in the comments section. Hint, he clams to have invented the internet, and is all about convenient, I mean, inconvenient truths. Now for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: We all benefit by the great smart thermostat race and there is no dis-inventing the Nest.
How to Connect Nest and Humidistat : Nest
R — The R terminal is the power for the thermostat. This comes from the transformer usually located in the air handler for split systems but you may find the transformer in the condensing unit. For this reason, it is a good idea to kill the power at the condenser and the air handler before changing or working on the wiring at the thermostat.
If you have a package unit then the transformer is in the package unit.
The display wakes up when it detects movement, though.
